Description:
SFR is a water-impounding earth-dam structure used to collect rainfall and runoff. It is designed for use in a single farm. Typically, it has an area of about 300-2,000 square meters. The embankment height above ground level is less than 4 m. It can be easily constructed using a bulldozer or with manual labor. The SFR enables farmers ro raise fish and grow livestock. It provides irrigation for a dry-season crop and supplements water for wet season cropping. Irrigation is done with PVC siphon pipes or pumps.

Possible Areas of Technology Application:
SFRs can be built in flat area or on slopes of up to 18% (undulating topography is most suitable because there are more opportunities to build embankments across valley bottoms). Loam, sandy loam, clay loam and sandy clay loam are ideal soil types for SFR embankment. It is applicable to all types of climate. However, it would give higher benefit if rainfall pattern is unimodal with five wet months (more than 200 mm/month), five dry months (less than 100 mm/month), two transition months (100-200 mm/month), and total annual rainfall is above 1500 mm. It also provides sufficient catchment area to harvest runoff and is applicable for farm size areas of about 0.5 hectare or larger
